He first picked up a camera as a photo journalist to help tell the unfortunate stories of many around the world. Along his journey he discovered unparalleled beauty in the subjects he documented and the places he visited.

“Honestly, telling stories with a camera is just a part of my creative nature. My first ‘loves’ besides my family is glassblowing and cooking. If I could I would do them everyday of my life. But, I find that all people, from all walks of life, live such beautiful moments worth documenting and sharing. Through my lens I find a unique perspective and opportunity to capture and make those moments timeless.”

  • John Khai’s bold brushstrokes and vivid colors bring an intensity to his landscape’s celebration of the peacefulness of nature with an almost surrealistic radiance.

There’s no subtlety of shading or hints of hidden depths in these works: they’re strong forthright and self- assured. Trees become solid blocks of color defined by angular lines, while the skies above are vast empty spaces creating a sensation of airy calmness.

At first Sight, these interpretations could be mistaken for the work of a European artist imbued with a character that seems more northern hemisphere than that of Asia—what may well be the result of the remarkable lineage behind these fascination landscape paintings.

John Khai is originally from Chin State in Myanmar formerly known as Burma. He moved across the border into Thailand in 2007 & began painting just a year later, using his homeland memories and new-found local landscapes as inspiration.

The modest township of Mae Sot itself is home to an extraordinary community of artists and this where he discovered his passion for panting as a profound means of self-expression

Although initially taken under the wing of a local Mae Sot artist Saw Cu Cil, John’s influences come from an appreciation of color usage by the likes of artists in his native Myanmar. He admits to have found admiration for the work of Vincent Van Gogh.

Finding his own authentic voice has meant changing his work medium from watercolors & adopting his preferred medium of acrylics on canvas.

John’s expressive talents have innate vibrancy setting him apart from most of his contemporaries

It’s ironic that all these bright, glowing landscapes are created at night during the hours of darkness when John’s sense of inspiration is most alive.

He’s established his own individual style in his own unique way , surrounded by an inspirational landscape & story he calls home.
